Thing 23 - Finished! - Drum roll please

I have learnt heaps of new things and tidbits. Can be frustrating at times, this learning process, but worthwhile in the end. Took some time to do the 23 things, but I have finished.

Favourite thing, would have to be Flickr and the image generators. I like photography so this was interesting as well a fun.

Blog - I would not hesitate to do in the future now. I could use for a travel journal in future, be a good idea. Library Thing was good and I'm still using but I find it frustrating. I would like something simpler. I may look into this.

I came across an email the other day for a similar learning tool for teenagers. Still 23 things. I must have a look, I may learn more. I want to see if it has the same learning tools as this one.

Would I do it again? Yes. I would be hesitant at first but I know that it would be a good learning curve.

Thing 22 - Books online
I had a look at Google Reader and Project Gutenberg and the Australian Gutenberg version too. I searched and looked at photography and got sidetracked to early Australian history when in Australian Gutenberg. I found this was very interesting looking up Matthew Flinders journal and the like. I preferred the Gutenberg website better than Google Reader. These books/journals are out of copyright and can be viewed in full which would be very helpful for studying history and researching. I did have a quick read of the copyright laws and I understand it is for downloading of books. I would look into it further if I should download.
How do these e-book websites benefit our libraries? If the websites were linked to libraries to show you were hard copies are located, this maybe of use to some people. They help to track the hard copy down.
Copyright, I donot fully comprehend. I understand if you give Google Reader permission for users to download your book you will negotiate a percentage rate of a cost for this. I think that is fair. Time will tell and copyright issues will be sorted.
Information access - I think if you don't get out there and extend information access you will be left in the dark. You will become extinct. Libraries have to keep up with progress.

Thing 21 - Podcasts
I was not that interested in doing this one. I thought it would be similar to Youtube. Anyhow, I had a look at Podcastalley.com and I thought the website did not look that enticing. I googled 'library podcast' a came up with podbean.com which looked more modern and inviting and you could search by tags.
Podcasts for some learning would be good. There were podcasts just for listening which would be great, not having to read everything. This would be good for learning new languages, listening to the correct pronunciation, etc. If you have your podcast on your mp3 player you can listen and do something else at the same time, like going for a walk, travelling in the car/public transport. Good for students. It is a new version of the old audio books but can be applied and received in so many numerous ways.
I didn't do an RSS feed, I thought I have spent long enough.
By doing Thing 21 I have broaden my horizons to what is out there and what is available.

Thing 20 - You Tube
I may have looked at videos that were added from YouTube but I have not really explored You Tube before!
I searched where I live and came up with some interesteing videos and to see faces and places I know. There is alot of info out there that I just didn't realise was available.
In future I may use this as part of my search technique 'cause I just thougt YOuTube was full of silly things for young ones. Alot of videos that are not so good either, I presume!

From the library perspective, I would recommend it as a learning tool. The visual aspect would be of great benefit. Look at such 'n' such, this is how it works or looks.

Check out video I selected below. I was checking out camera bags and was wanting camera /travel bag all in one. I like this because I can see the video and comprehend how big it is. I may get one of these.

Thing 19 - Your choice

We had to have a look at the Web 2.0 awards and nominees.  That was interesting. I had a look at quite a few. Ones for travel and all  sorts of topics that interested me.  I looked at the awards for  books.  The Worldcat would definetly be useful for libraries and the Biblio if you were searching for that  odd book to add to your library.
Having a 'start page' for fyour personal use could be worthwhile. To have all your favourite sites linked to your start page would be handy for access and ready reference.  Just have to set it up!

All together interesting!

Thing 18 - Online Productivity tools

Had a look at Zoho Writer and Google docs. Took the tour at Google docs.  I made an account at Google docs and uploaded one of my assignments to it.  I gave permission for 2 people to view my docs and tried a couple of things.

This is a great application.   As a student myself, this could be very handy.  Don't need to use extra devices to store info on although it is wise to have more than one storage place. It is accessilbe for your teacher/tutor to check out whoever you allow.  The teacher can also make comments on the side, and then  you can fix them.  When your on the move, say travelling,  be great for that.

Could be good for choosing templates too.  I had a quick look at them and found interesting examples. Plenty there to look at.

Overall, great application.

Wikis - Library thing 16
I quite enjoyed looking into this one.  I liked the SJCPL subject guides  for that particular library, I thought that was a good idea and it helps others.  Persons can add to it which it makes more helpful.
Book Lovers Wiki - what a good idea!  It is also  a way of getting  children or adults to use the net, put their comments across.
My idea  for the library Wiki - To  do it inconjunction with the library event and make it part of the event, most likely for children.   Probably similar to the Book Lovers Wiki.

Thing 15    Library 2-0
Read all but one of the perspectives on Library 2.0 from the listed links. These were written a few years back now but still relevant. I liked the article " Away from the Icebergs" especially the the piece titled  "reliance on user education" and agree with this.  As I am of the old vintage I find it a challenge to keep up with new technology and gadgets. Young ones seem to grasp it ever so easily.
I think to provide a library service  for patrons they will have to keep up with new advances and changes in technology-driven applications for its library users. Learning is the hard part for us old vintage not just for library users but for the library staff.

thing 14 - Technorati
I did have a look around in Technorati.
No doubt the website has changed somewhat since first having to do these 23 things. We had exercises to do but due to the changes the exercises did not make sense.   Had a look at tags and searched by them.  Had a look  at  a few other things.
I was not keen on Technorati and I don't think I would use again.

Thing 12 - Twitter
Hmm what should I do?  Looked at other blogs by colleagues and read them. Put a comment on one. One colleague suggested Twitter.  I thought I would do that as part of the 23 things but we don't.  That made up mind to have a look.  I do go on Facebook quite regularly  so familar with that and have heard twitter mentioned.
Well, looked at Twitter and signed up etc.  I followed 2 sites.  Must say I was not impressed with Twitter, not at all.  Ican say I've done that now.
I would rather do Facebook anyday.

Thing 10 - Library Thing
Ooh, I liked this one!. I added 6 books,  tagged an rated them. Made a 'to read' list, which I may use in the futrure when deciding what I would like to read.  Liked the concept of having different views for your books.  Took me a while to find out how to add to the 'wish list' or the 'to read' list.  I think I shall be visiting Library Thing again.

Thing 8 Mashups
I had a look at these.  I did some of my own searching as some of the links are old now.  Looked at some on flickr too.  I keep coming back to applications that have  maps and photos combined.  One of the mashups I liked was flappr.  You can search photos by a few different ways.  Mypicsmap was another  geotagged map application but not that good I thought. I have geotagged my NCL photos - only three.
